Hey, My Friend: Welcome To Wintry City!
I'm so happy that you will be here until next month. Fortunately, when you will arrived weather will be more gentle and warmer than now. Because, you want to live here for couple of years I have some advise for you to know something about your new city.
First, Calgary has 9months winter, 3weeks summer and the rest of that like spring and fall ( but not the same that you tried it before). I know this isn't pleasant news, but it's a truth. Don't bring any warm overcoats, it's better you buy it from here. These ones have some material that keep body's heat in them selves.
Second, since you want to study in the U of C; it's better you live in campus or near university in north west of Calgary. This city has long time traffics so you can save your time. There are good transportation from university to downtown such as train and bus; by the way Calgary's people called their train " C train. " I don't recommend you to buy a car at the beginning. Driving on frozen roads, imagine! You can rent a car for a few weeks. Don't forget to translate your driving license; you must bring it with the original one.
At the end, I'm so excited to see you here. There are many different restaurants and a few gorgeous malls which are waiting for us ;) Also, there are many places for skiing or other winter's sport. I can't permit the nature of Calgary, lakes, mountains and its sky.
Don't worry about the cold weather; in this city you believe CHINOOK even more than the god!
Don't ask me about it, you will feel it :)
Hmm, I think our winter is only 8 months long! Maybe it's 9 months long this year though...ha ha. Unfortunately, we didn't have many chinooks this year.

This city has bad traffic jams so you can save time.
